about the project Antje Schiffers spent a year living in Chicahuaxtla, a village in Mexico at 3000 meters above sea level. She experienced it as a strange world. A world in which liquor is never drunk without giving a little to the earth, eggs are used to cleanse people from evil eyes, and rattlesnakes speak all languages.

When Antje arrived she didn’t know where to begin. She drew the flowers growing around her house, and then all the ones she found along the way. To make the catalogue of plants more comprehensive she was shown rare flowers. People called her a Flower Drawer, as if it were a respectable profession.

Antje lent out cameras in Chicahuaxtla with black and white film, set up a darkroom and showed everybody who wanted to participate how to develop the film and make enlargements.

about artist and participants Antje Schiffers (Heiligendorf, Germany) lives in Berlin. She is one of the initiators of myvillages.org. Much of her work deals with travelling. In a way, being in transit is the mode of her artistic existence; her journeys are based on exchange. Describing, documenting and communicating this process are part of her work.
