about the project “Roadshow” took artworks, artists and curators on tour to rural venues across the country. The project was devised and developed by Grizedale Arts, FlatPack001 and the commissioned artists. The outcome was three outdoor weekend events and two indoor gallery events, showcasing a wide range of new work, from live performance to film and video.

All works shown at the outdoor events were presented and performed in and around a newly commissioned architectural structure designed by artists / curators FlatPack001. Revelling in the true spirit of the ‘tour’, artists and curators were on the road together and on site over each weekend.

The publication is an attempt to convey the myriad facts of the Roadshow project; it randomly skates around the many aspects - from the artists’ perceptions of their roles to the audience interaction. The project became a bonding experience for the participants, one that wedded groups together and leaves a legacy of further collaborations and a new direction for many of the artists and audience. Texts in the catalogue are by Adam Sutherland, Mark and Stephen Beasley, Dan Fox and Bedwyr Williams.

about artist and participants Grizedale Arts is a commissioning and residency agency based in Grizedale Forest in the Lake District of Great Britain. The programme supports artists in making new works that relate to the context of the area. Much of the work made here engages with ideas of romanticism, the environment and the way the place is used both symbolically and in real terms, i.e. what does the countryside do for us and what do we expect from it? The programme engages with local communities and events, integrating artists’ thinking and communication into mainstream and traditional activities.

The core group of artists showing work at each venue were Guy Bar-Amotz, Polly Braden, Olaf Breuning, Minerva Cuevas, FlatPack001, Dan Fox, Colin Lowe and Roddy Thomson, Nat Mellors, juneau/projects, Kevin Reid, Jo Roberts, Graeme Roger, Paul Rooney, Mark Titchner and Henry V111’s Wives.

As Vic the Roadshow Runner, Jo Roberts performed as an evangelical human flyer, arriving in advance of the Roadshow crew, engaging with people in a variety of venues, from the roadside, libraries and supermarkets to schools, colleges and local media. In each venue Jo would represent and discuss Roadshow, art and people’s lives.
