Vegetables on urban allotment
Urban allotment

about the project Lara Almarcegui spent three years in Rotterdam investigating the phenomenon of urban allotments. She became part of a community of allotment gardeners and cultivated her own plot. An allotment is a plot of land, often found near a railway line or a motorway, where city dwellers grow vegetables and flowers.

In a civilisation where housing, the workplace and even recreational sites are planned, mass urban gardens challenge the status quo, as one of the few places in a city that are not in the hands of urban planners or architects, but of the people that use them.

about artist and participants For this project Lara Almarcegui became part of the community and did not make an issue of the fact that she was an artist. Her aim was to learn how to become an allotment gardener. In presentations and exhibitions that took place in a later stage Lara focused mainly on her own garden and the changes it underwent. At the same time her work raises issues about the surroundings as a whole and the problems allotment gardeners face as a result of new urban planning.

In general Almarcegui’s projects and actions relate to spaces that are outside the designed environment, such as buildings in a state of transformation, allotment gardens and wastelands.
