about the media Book with introduction and information on Thorsen’s 9 village projects.

about the project Since 2001, Sofie Thorsen has, from various viewpoints, studied, analysed, inventoried, and fictitiously animated the phenomena of village structures. Thorsen: “The works deal with the village as a concept, as a system but also as a model of longing, as a model of living… The housing settlement or the built structure is something which can be reflected upon and thought about in many quite different levels. This runs through all the works.” (Sofie Thorsen in an interview with Julia Schäfer, 2005).

Sofie Thorsen works in series - inside of each work itself, but also within cycles of works. Since 2001, ten Village figures have originated all together. The term Village fig. itself indicates seriality or the character of the textbook case and the numeration generates a trace of scholarliness. The 9 projects described in this book are situated in or based on different areas, for example villages in Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Poland and Germany.

According to which region is involved the focus of the artist changes. Amongst other things, she is analyst, tourist, researcher, curious girl, stranger, inhabitant of the global village, traveller, documentary maker. For example: in Village fig. 2 / Counting the Parts (2001), Thorsen deconstructs and inventories the façade of a typical Danish village and points out its lack of coherence. In Village fig. 7 / +- Guided Tours (2004) she researches the suburban space of Leipzig. In one of her latest projects, also represented in the Bibliobox, she accompanies young people in Upper Austria in the exploration of the theme of appropriation of public space (Village fig.
