about the project The Rural Art Space Symposium was a 1-day Symposium that took place on the 17th of January 2007 in the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery. The Symposium opened a discussion about art and the rural environment to art practitioners other than myvillages, curators and administrators in the region.

The day started by looking at current culture led regeneration initiatives for the rural environment, and a critical examination of art’s possible role and relevance within such programmes. The workshop based afternoon focussed on case studies and explored different issues that were relevant to the curation and production of art in a rural environment.

Kathrin Böhm, one of the three myvillages-artists, made a report of the symposium on paper, with reviews, transcripts, drawings and CV’s of the presenters. A DVD with videoreport and soundbites is included in the Bibliobox. On the DVD, visitors of the symposium explain why their visit was worth while and what new ideas it brought them.

In the soundbites visitors pronounce the words Shrewsbury and Shropshire, result of a project of Wapke Feenstra. From november 2006 the Bibliobox, the soundstudio and the Art Gallery of Belmont in Schrewsbury were used as a workshopspace to collect Shropshire sounds. A group of young media students learned Wapke how to say the words Shrewsbury and Shropshire, with and without an accent.

about artist and participants Myvillages.org is a co-operation between three artists. Kathrin Böhm (Höfen, 1969) researches the role of art in the public and architectural space in her projects, often together with Public Works. In the ‘cityscapes’ of Wapke Feenstra (Wjelsryp, 1959) inhabitants or visitors participate in extensive (digital) art projects. In a related manner Antje Schiffers (Heiligendorf, 1967) reports about her encounters and travels in her (written) projects.

Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery is housed in two adjoining merchant’s houses of the 16th - 17th Century. The museum shows and initiates, among others, contemporary art projects.
