about the project Village Kiosk is a new international initiative by artists/architects Public Works from London and the artist initiative myvillages.org and the commissioning organization Grizedale Arts. The Village Kiosk is both a space for trade and discussion. It already exists at times in various places across our networks. Sometimes for trade, sometimes for discussion, sometimes for display, and always for rural/rural or rural/urban exchange.

The first Village Kiosk afternoon took place the 27th of April, as part of the HAPPENING series of NAI Rotterdam: two months of concerts, theaterplays, debates, films and performances in and around an installation that Wiel Arets Architects designed especially for NAI.

This afternoon three things took place: the production of a catalogue in the Village Kiosk counter, a discussion between invited speakers and public, and drinks and village snacks to round the afternoon off. The product-catalogue visualizes suggestions, made by the artists and visitors, for new shop-products.

about artist and participants Myvillages.org is a co-operation between three artists. Kathrin Böhm (Höfen, 1969) researches the role of art in the public and architectural space in her projects, often together with Public Works. In the ‘cityscapes’ of Wapke Feenstra (Wjelsryp, 1959) inhabitants or visitors participate in extensive (digital) art projects. In a related manner Antje Schiffers (Heiligendorf, 1967) reports about her encounters and travels in her (written) projects.

Grizedale Arts is a commissioning and residency agency based in Grizedale Forest in the Lake District of Great Britain. The programme supports artists in making new works that relate to the context of the unique area. These ideas often engage with ideas of romanticism, the environment and the way the place is used: what does the countryside do for us and what do we expect from it?

Invited speakers were Alexandra Gaba-Van Dongen (Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum), Robert-Jan Muller (kunsthistoricus & onafhankelijk curator), Wapke Feenstra (myvillages.org), Kathrin Böhm (Public Works / myvillages.org), Andreas Lang (Public Works) and Emiliano Gandolfi (NAi).
