about the project Over the past twenty years the Dienst Landelijk Gebied (a government body responsible for ‘green’ areas in the Netherlands) has supervised some twenty art projects and commissioned 115 works. One of these projects, “Semslinie Kunstlijn”, marks the conclusion of the re-organisation of the East Groningen region and the so-called ‘Gronings-Drentse Veenkoloniën’ or ‘Peat District’ found in the north-eastern provinces of Groningen and Drenthe. This final art project was aimed at examining the quality and the character of the landscape in the area.
 
Artist Loes Heebink was asked to come up with a concept for this final art project. She chose to focus on the ‘Semslinie’, a 400-year old borderline, 40 km long and as straight as a die, which is named after the land surveyor Johan Sems. Heebink writes: “As well as creating a convincing dialogue between the piece and its specific location, the work should also make a connection between the present, the past and the future.” Heebink invited eight artists to create a piece of work with this master plan in mind.

in project language De afgelopen twintig jaar zwengelde de Dienst Landelijk Gebied ruim twintig kunstprojecten aan en gaf 115 opdrachten voor kunstwerken. Een van deze projecten, “Semslinie Kunstlijn”, onderstreept de voltooide herinrichting van de Gronings-Drentse Veenkoloniën. Het project vraagt aandacht voor de kwaliteit en het karakter van het landschap.
 
Kunstenaar Loes Heebink richtte zich daarbij op de ‘Semslinie’, een 400 jaar oude kaarsrechte ‘lijn’ in het landschap, genoemd naar cartograaf Johan Sems. Heebink schrijft: “Naast dat het werk een dialoog moet aangaan met zijn specifieke omgeving, zouden de kunstwerken ook een verbinding moeten maken tussen heden, verleden en toekomst.” Heebink vroeg 8 kunstenaars een werk te maken vanuit dit masterplan.

She made the concept for “Semslinie Kunstlijn”. Participating artists: Observatorium, Eric de Lyon, Adriaan Rees, Jorgen Leijenaar, Atelier van Lieshout, Martijn Veldhoen, Karen Lancel / Marjorieke Glaudemans and Elsa Stansfield / Madelon Hooykaas.
 
The artists were selected on grounds of their attitude towards and their interest in the past and the atmosphere of a specific location. Some artists, such as Atelier van Lieshout & Martijn Veldhoen used existing buildings and infrastructures to make a work of art that the public could visit. Others involved the public in their work of art, like Karen Lancel & Marjorieke Glaudemans in ‘Nomansland’ - a plot of land covering ten square metres that would serve as an independent place for reflection. For the DVD Wiel Conen made special compositions inspired by the artworks.
 
Artist Loes Heebink (Utrecht, 1955) is one of the initiators and a member of KIK (Stichting Kunst in Kolderveen). She works in Kolderveen and makes video installations, works using photography and works in the public space.

in project language Heebink kreeg de opdracht een plan te maken voor kunst in de Gronings-Drentse Veenkoloniën, van o.a. de provincies Groningen en Drenthe, negen gemeenten, het waterschap en de Dienst Landelijk Gebied / Herinrichting. Heebink nodigde de volgende kunstenaars uit: Observatorium, Eric de Lyon, Adriaan Rees, Jorgen Leijenaar, Atelier van Lieshout, Martijn Veldhoen, Karen Lancel / Marjorieke Glaudemans en Elsa Stansfield / Madelon Hooykaas.
 
De kunstenaars zijn gekozen op basis van hun visie op en interesse in het verleden en in de sfeer van een locatie. Sommige kunstenaars, zoals Atelier van Lieshout & Martijn Veldhoen, gebruikten bestaande gebouwen en wegen om een werk te maken dat het publiek kon bezoeken. Anderen lieten de bezoekers deelnemen aan hun kunstwerk, zoals Karen Lancel & Marjorieke Glaudemans met ‘Nomansland’ - een stuk land van 10 vierkante meter waar men zich terug kon trekken voor een moment van reflectie. Voor de DVD componeerde Wiel Conen muziekstukken bij elk kunstwerk.
 
Kunstenaar Loes Heebink (Utrecht, 1955) is een van de oprichters en leden van KIK (Stichting Kunst in Kolderveen). Ze werkt in Kolderveen en maakt video-installaties, werkt met fotografie en maakt kunst in de openbare ruimte.
