about the project ‘Kunst im Dorf’ (Art in the Village) takes town planning as its starting point and integrates art with the street planning of the village of Hohenstein. Six artists spent the summer there working on a proposal. Two art projects came out of this: ‘HohensteinTISCH’ by Ulrike Böhme and ‘Labyrinth und Praïrie’ by Boris Sieverts. Documentation on the proposals and the resulting projects can be found in the book that was made to accompany the project.

about artist and participants The artists spent the summer of 2003 working in the village. There was a lively exchange of ideas amongst the participants, and between the villagers and the artists in particular. The villagers were involved in the project from the start, and they performed in the resulting projects. In the case of ‘HohensteinTISCH’ they got on stage to act and interact. Boris Sieverts’ piece also had local residents playing an active role, and the process was very animated. The output was a guideline for local governments intending to commission art projects within the context of municipal planning.

Participating artists were Ulrike Böhme (Stuttgart), Brigitte Braun / Betina Panek (Reutlingen), Katja Heinecke / Reinhard Krehl (Leipzig), Matthias Schmidt (Potsdam), Boris Sieverts (Köln) and Francis Zeischegg (Berlin).

The artist Doris Koch (Niederstotzingen, 1960) lives and works in Berlin and has worked extensively in rural contexts. Koch wrote the concept for, and coordinated the project ‘Kunst im Dorf’. Koch’s diverse practice includes researches on the interface between art history and cultural studies / ethnology, conceptual art, and curating (cooperative) art projects.
in project language Es kam ein lebendiger Kommunikationsprozess zwischen den Projektbeteiligten, vor allem aber zwischen den Bewohnern Hohensteins und den Künstlern in Gang.
