about the project The municipality of Twenterand consists of 9 villages. Andrea Stultiens wanted to depict the character of the municipality as a whole. She soon discovered the differences between the 9 places. It made her wonder what it is that makes people feel ‘at home’ in their village. In her series of photographs, she tried to grasp this feeling by depicting people not only in their homes but also on the streets, in their village and their community.
This project is part of ‘Proeftuin Twente’, a project that researches the cultural characteristics of Twente in order to use the results for future developments in the area. For the period of a month 14 artists lived in the 14 municipalities of Twente in a mobile laboratory. | | in project language De gemeente Twenterand bestaat uit 9 dorpen. Andrea Stultiens wilde het karakter van de gemeente in kaart brengen, maar ze merkte al gauw dat de 9 kernen flink van elkaar verschilden. Stultiens vroeg zich daarop af wat het was dat mensen ‘thuis’ deed voelen in hun eigen dorp. In haar fotoserie probeerde ze dat thuisgevoel te vatten door de inwoners niet alleen te fotograferen in hun huizen maar ook op straat, in het dorp, in de wijk en de gemeente.
Dit project is onderdeel van ‘Proeftuin Twente’, een project dat de culturele eigenschappen van Twente in kaart brengt om de resultaten in te kunnen zetten bij toekomstige ontwikkelingen in het gebied. Gedurende een maand verbleven 14 kunstenaars in de 14 Twentse gemeenten in een mobiel laboratorium. |
about artist and participants A lot of people from Twenterand participated in this project by inviting Stultiens to their home or their club. The book was made with the cooperation of Monique Goris (editor) and Sepp Bader (design).
Andrea Stultiens (1974) studied photography in the Dutch cities of Utrecht (HKU) and Breda (St. Joost). She is fascinated by the impact people have on their surroundings, and vice versa. Her pictures are taken at specific locations, like private houses, landscapes or villages - but they are almost always a vehicle for identification. | | in project language Veel mensen uit Twenterand maakten deel uit van het project door hun deuren te openen voor de fotografe. Het boek is mede tot stand gekomen door bijdragen van Monique Goris (redactie) en Sepp Bader (vormgeving).
Andrea Stultiens (1974) studeerde aan de HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht) en aan de Post St. Joost in Breda volgde ze een masters fotografie. Stultiens is gefascineerd door de wisselwerking tussen mens en omgeving: hoe mensen beïnvloed worden door hun omgeving, maar ook hoe mensen de omgeving naar eigen hand zetten. Haar foto’s zijn genomen op specifieke plekken (persoonlijke interieurs, landschappen, dorpen) maar laten toch veelal herkenbare situaties zien. |
